Empowering a new generation

Facilitating positive change in young people

Welcome to Together We Make a Difference (TWMAD), a Stoke-on-Trent based organisation empowering young people to imagine a brighter future for themselves.

We are a youth mentoring programme, where we connect with and support young people on a one-to-one basis.

Explore how we empower young people to define and exceed their own expectations for what they can achieve.

How do we make a difference?

The key to how we make a difference is in the name – it happens together.

That means engaging with a young person from the very start. It means really listening to them – finding out who they are, what they want, what they’re worried about, and everything in between.

We provide bespoke support that’s based on each individual, whether that’s through one-to-one mentoring or engaging in vocational learning.

When it comes to making a difference, we’re just the spark. We work with each individual, empowering them to explore new ideas, challenge expectations, and make positive changes in their own life.

Empowering young people to raise the bar for themselves

Young people are often told what to do without being given the chance to understand why they must do it.

Messages like ‘concentrate on your studies’ or ‘stop getting in trouble at school’ won’t stick unless there’s a ‘why’. We ask young people big questions so they can form their own answers and take action:

  • “Why am I doing what I’m doing right now?”

  • “What do I want from life in the future?”

  • “Is there something more out there for me?”

Transformative, long-lasting change comes from within – we empower young people to achieve that for themselves.

We do not define or judge our young people based on their past behaviours or actions. The only person who ever knows your full story is you – it’s why we ask you to share yours with us.

What challenges do we support young people in overcoming?

Many of the individuals we work with are experiencing severe challenges in their lives.

Whether they are dealing with issues at home, at school, out in the community, or somewhere else, we always start by asking the young person to share their story.

Challenges can range from gangs and county lines involvement to social anxiety and isolation. Whatever their experiences or past actions, there is always zero judgement at TWMAD.

Together with the young person, we work on changing or managing behaviours, mindsets, or coping strategies that they feel are no longer serving them.

Matthew’s story

“TWMAD are so different. When I’m getting in trouble, I usually get asked about what’s happening at home or whether there’s violence in my life. Marvin actually talked to me – he asked me what I wanted from my situation, what I was interested in, and how I thought I could change things for myself.”

About Together We Make a Difference

TWMAD CIC is an organisation that empowers young people to reach for their own version of a bright future.

We are committed to each individual young person’s journey, whatever that looks like. We tell our young people:

  • You know yourself best – we’ll help you deepen that understanding through meaningful communication and mentorship.
  • Your past behaviours don’t define you – your attitude today and the actions you take tomorrow are what counts.
  • We’ll help you challenge the mindsets and behaviours that you decide aren’t serving you – but only once trust has been earned.

TWMAD believes that every young person can create long-lasting, positive change in their own lives – they just need the right support.
