At TWMAD, we believe every young person has the potential to thrive, even when life presents significant challenges. Seb, a Year 8 student and a Looked-After Child (LAC), exemplifies this belief.
Seb is a likeable and generally well-supported young person who often experiences success in school. However, like many young people navigating complex circumstances, Seb struggles to manage setbacks when they arise.
His responses can include disruptive behaviour and an inability to accept consequences, leading to an increasing number of exclusions. Seb tends to escalate situations quickly, often displaying patterns of avoidance and self-sabotage, particularly in tasks where he fears failure, such as difficult lessons or exams.
Recognising these challenges, Seb’s school turned to TWMAD for support. Our mentoring programme became the one consistent intervention that has positively impacted his behaviour and mindset.
A Safe Space to Thrive
Through our sessions, Seb has found a safe and supportive environment where he can openly express his feelings. The bond he has developed with his mentor has been transformative. With a reliable role model by his side, Seb is learning to trust in the support offered to him and to communicate his emotions more openly. His mentor has not only guided him but also helped him explore positive activities and new ways of thinking, reinforcing the idea that setbacks are opportunities for growth rather than failures.
Building Resilience
Over time, Seb has made significant strides in resilience and coping skills. While challenges remain, he now recognises that he is a “work in progress” — a powerful mindset for any young person to adopt. His newfound ability to approach setbacks with more constructive strategies is a testament to the trust and rapport built through our mentoring program.
Looking Ahead
Seb’s journey isn’t over, but the progress he has made so far highlights the importance of consistent, tailored support for young people like him.
At TWMAD, we are proud to provide mentoring that makes a difference, helping young people like Seb feel seen, understood, and empowered to face life’s challenges.
Together, we’re building resilience and creating brighter futures, one young person at a time.
