Referral information
Jack is a charismatic and talented young person with a passion for DJing and music. Raised by his mother alongside many siblings and without a relationship with his father, who is in prison. Jack faced significant challenges from an early age as he became deeply embroiled in gang culture and risky behaviours, including drug dealing and knife carrying.
Chaos
The impact of these experiences was significant and led to traumatic events such as the loss of a close friend to gang violence and direct threats to Jack’s own life being made. His safety and wellbeing were at significant risk, which led to a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard (DoLS) being put in place to ensure his protection.
Jack’s life was turned upside down when he was moved from the area where he had grown up and placed into a care setting in a completely different environment. The transition was challenging, and the residential home quickly recognised the need for support from someone who Jack could relate to—someone who could provide a sense of familiarity and understanding in a time of upheaval.
The importance of cultural connection
Understanding the importance of cultural connection and shared experience, TWMAD was brought in to provide Jack with a mentor who could offer the support he needed. This mentor wasn’t just someone assigned to Jack’s case, but someone who truly resonated with him, both culturally and personally. Having a mentor who Jack felt was recognisable and relatable made all the difference in helping him adjust to his new life and build trust in the process of change.
Consistent mentoring
Meeting with Jack twice a week, his mentor has created a space where he feels valued, heard, and understood—an environment that developed trust and encouraged personal growth.
The goal of our work with Jack has been to re build his confidence, support his cultural needs, and guide him toward a brighter, more positive future. Over time, Jack has made remarkable progress and he has began to rebuild his life. He feels more settled in his new environment, attends school regularly, and is engaged in music activities in his community something he has always enjoyed and excelled in.
Through consistent mentorship, Jack has developed a strong, trusting relationship with his mentor, which has allowed him to express a renewed sense of belonging and excitement for his future.
When the world becomes your oyster
His natural charisma and musical talent, combined with the dedicated support he receives, position him for success and the opportunity to reach his full potential.
Reflecting on how far he has come, Jack recognises how different his life is today compared to the dangerous path he once followed. He now has a clear and positive vision for his future, and with continued encouragement and support, we believe he can achieve great things, unlocking his outstanding potential in a safe and fulfilling way.
